Leave Your Sleep
Product Description
'This album captures so many magical moments, the best times I've ever had as a musician,' declares singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant of 'Leave Your Sleep,' her ambitious, two-disc Nonesuch debut. Merchant, celebrated solo artist and one-time voice of 10,000 Maniacs, took on what could have been a daunting task: she's adapted 19th and 20th century British and American poetry - well-known and obscure works, anonymous rhymes, children's lullabies, all of it timeless<... I’m surprised the record companies haven’t figured out that they need to lower the price of CDs to stop the erosion of their business. This CD costs $20 at Borders brick and mortor. Here it is $15. I suppose her audience is older and may have the cash and the inclination to buy CDs. But really, I’d expect all CDs to hit the $9.99 level to match iTunes. For me, I can wait until this cools and get it at a reasonable rate.

contrived is probably a good way to describe this record. and, yes, fanboys (and girls), I’ve most certainly listened to it at length (not just 30 second samples), having had the owner of my local record store put the disc in the store’s cd player both times I visited this week. oh well. better luck next time, Natalie…

Dear Natalie,
I’m sorry to say that I just don’t like your new album. I didn’t much like your last album either. I expect to be ripped by some of your fans for saying this…that’s OK. They’re all entitled to their own opinions.
Once upon a time your songs hit me just right. Your voice was beautiful, and your songs rang with feeling…and the musical accompaniment was great. I could listen to the albums over and over. Now…well..I don’t know.
Maybe you’re trying too hard. Or maybe not trying hard enough. Have you lost interest in your work? If so…that’s OK. You’re still beautiful and smart..and I still like you…and next time I see you on stage I’m sure I’ll still enjoy your unique style of dancing. But I really wish I could enjoy your recent music…but not so. There’s just not much good music being produced these days…so I always get my hopes up when I know you’re close to a new release. It’s such a disappointment.
Ophelia…where are you now that I need you?

I listened to and admired Natalie Merchants voice before anyone knew who she was with 10,000 Maniacs back in the 80s. I love her voice – truly original and beautiful but this CD is a sleeper, I have to admit. And everyone – it’s only $13.99 at Target (regular price).

I loved, loved Natalie’s “Ophelia” and “Tigerlily”. Even “Motherland” had a few okay songs, but lately her albums lean more toward the folk/bluegrass genre. This album seems like it would almost fit in at an Octoberfest party or something. LOL I just don’t find it listenable. This is yet another album I will be skipping on.
